School holidays are just precious, and I say this as a mum of a 14- and 17-year-old where school breaks won’t be as much of a thing in a few year’s time (although I secretly live in hope that my sons will holiday with me every year forever!)
The school breaks are a chance to reset, reconnect and create memories that last long after the backpacks go back to school.
Whether you’re dreaming of sandy beaches, nature-filled adventures, cultural city breaks or meaningful slow travel, there’s something here for every family vibe and age group. From toddlers to teens, these destinations deliver joy, ease and plenty to explore together.
Here are my top holiday destinations for the school break:
1. Algarve, Portugal | Sun, Sea & Little Adventures
Perfect for families who love beach days with a side of exploration, the Algarve delivers wide sandy shores, calm coves and plenty of activities. Kids can splash and paddle safely while the older crew try kayaking through sea caves or learning to surf. Towns like Lagos and Albufeira offer family friendly stays and easy day trips to wildlife parks and water parks.
Why families love it: gentle water, great food, relaxed pace.
2. Bali, Indonesia | Culture, Nature & Beaches
Bali remains a top family choice in 2026, and it’s easy to see why. Ubud’s rice terraces and monkey forests feel like a natural classroom, while beaches in Seminyak and Nusa Dua offer fun in the sand and gentle waves. Add in cooking classes, river rafting and the chance to meet local artisans and you’ve got a holiday full of variety.
Tips: choose resorts with kids’ clubs so adults enjoy some downtime too.
3. Yellowstone & Grand Teton, USA | Wild Nature, Big Smiles
If your family loves wide open spaces and outdoor adventures, a nature road trip through Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks is hard to beat. Think geysers, hot springs, wildlife sightings and endless hiking trails. Campsites, cabins or lodges make it an adventure for every comfort level.
Why it works: Unplugged fun, active days, educational and awe inspiring landscapes.
4. Kyoto & Tokyo, Japan | Culture Meets Play
Japan is an incredible family destination, and pairing Kyoto with Tokyo gives the best of both worlds. Kyoto’s serene temples, gardens and tea ceremonies are a beautiful way to immerse kids in culture, while Tokyo’s interactive museums, amusement parks and futuristic cityscape appeal to adventurers of all ages.
Pro tip: Japan’s punctual trains and clean cities make travelling with children much easier.
5. Vancouver & Whistler, Canada | City & Mountains
This combo is ideal for families who enjoy diversity: vibrant Vancouver with parks, beaches and science museums followed by a mountain escape in Whistler. In Whistler, summer brings hiking, zip-lining and alpine lakes; winter is pure snow play with skiing and tobogganing.
Bonus: English-speaking, clean cities, outdoor lifestyle.
7. Mauritius | Tropical Luxury with Easy Relaxation
Looking for a splash of tropical luxury? Mauritius balances stunning beaches with calm lagoons, making it great for little swimmers and older kids alike. Resorts often have kids’ clubs, water sports, and excursions like dolphin cruises or nature parks, perfect for families who want to mix relaxation with adventure.
Why it’s trending: Safaris, reefs, cultural richness and serene resorts.
8. Puerto Rico | Caribbean Sunshine with Cultural Beat
Capturing global attention, not just for its stunning beaches and vibrant culture, but also because of the spotlight created by megastar Bad Bunny, whose music, lyrics and hugely popular summer residency in San Juan have helped boost travel interest and shine a fresh light on the island’s authentic charms. Blending family fun with cultural depth, little ones can splash in calm waters, explore historic forts in Old San Juan, kayak in bioluminescent bays or even trace Bad Bunny-inspired stops like Santurce’s colourful streets and beaches he sings about.
Tip: Perfect for families who want a touch of pop culture magic.
9. Rome & Amalfi Coast, Italy | History, Gelato, Sunsets
Italy is a classic family choice for good reason; history that captivates curious minds, gelato on every corner and picture perfect coastlines. Spend a few days in Rome exploring ancient ruins and fountains, then head to the Amalfi Coast for relaxed beach days and boat rides.
Family favourites: Colosseum tours, Pompeii, Capri boat trips.
10. Switzerland | Trains, Mountains & Storybook Views
For a magical holiday that feels like a fairytale, Switzerland delivers with scenic train journeys, alpine lakes and snow dusted peaks. Routes like the Glacier Express and Bernina Express are attractions on their own and fun for kids and adults alike. Swiss cities are clean, safe and easy to navigate, making logistics smooth on family trips.
Why it’s special: spectacular scenery + effortless travel.

How to Choose the Right Family Holiday for Your School Break
Before booking, consider:
Flight time tolerance (under 7 hours for younger children)
Climate during the school holiday period
Activity balance (pool days vs cultural days)
Accommodation style (villa vs resort vs city hotel)
Visa requirements from UAE
Pro tip: Planning ahead ensures better rates and availability – especially for Easter, summer and winter breaks.
