5 styling rules for mums with young kids

Style doesn’t have to be sacrificed to motherhood. Sarit Shefer, a stylist and mum of three shares five practical rules for looking and feeling good while navigating life with young children.

Rediscovering your sense of style after having children can be an exciting and deeply

empowering journey, and one I love supporting women through.

While motherhood brings endless joy (and responsibility), it’s so important that we don’t lose sight of ourselves in the process.

As mums, we juggle a lot. From caring for our children and managing the household, to

school runs, extracurricular activities, social calendars – and often a career alongside it all.

And then there’s the mental load… but that’s a whole article in itself!

I firmly believe that we deserve to look and feel good while doing it.

For me, styling for mums with young kids is about striking the right balance between comfort, practicality, and style.

Here are my five tried-and-tested styling rules for life with young kids – especially

here in the UAE.

  1. Comfort Is Key

When you’re constantly on the go, comfort isn’t optional – it’s essential. Add the UAE

climate into the mix, and fabric choice becomes even more important.

Opt for natural, breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, and silk during the warmer months. They feel better against the skin, allow for ease of movement, and help you stay cool — all while still looking polished.

2. Build a Wardrobe of Reliable Staples

Versatility is your best friend as a mum. Investing in a strong foundation of wardrobe staples makes getting dressed quicker and easier.

Think:

  • Well-fitting jeans or shorts

  • Slip or wrap skirts

  • Comfortable basic tops

  • Stylish trainers and beautiful flat sandals

These pieces can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits without overthinking.

Pro tip (from a mum of three): prints and patterns are far more forgiving than block colours. Baby spit-ups, sticky handprints, and inevitable stains are much less noticeable – trust me!

3. Practicality Matters (More Than Ever) WHEN styling for mums with young kids

Functional fashion is key.

Look for thoughtful details like:

  • Pockets in dresses or trousers (for keys, phones…and the inevitable shells, rocks,

toys, and “treasures” handed to you throughout the day)

  • Loose-fitting playsuits, which are brilliant for showing off your legs without flashing anyone when bending down or strapping kids into car seats

  • Wrap dresses and tops, or shirts with poppers. These are perfect for breastfeeding and far quicker than fiddling with buttons when a hungry baby is involved

And above all, choose fabrics that are easy to wash and care for. Spills and stains are simply part of mum life.

4. Fabulous (But Functional) Footwear

Comfortable footwear doesn’t mean compromising on style.

A great pair of trainers, chic flat sandals, or a comfortable wedge can elevate an outfit while

still supporting you through busy days on your feet. The right shoes will effortlessly tie your

look together – and keep you comfortable from school drop-off to afternoon activities.

5. Accessories Are Your Secret Weapon

Accessories have the power to transform even the simplest outfit.

A pair of statement earrings, a great watch, a stylish bag, or a well-chosen belt can instantly elevate jeans and a tee, adding personality and polish with minimal effort. When time is short, accessories do a lot of the heavy lifting.
